The Harmonized standards for the cybersecurity requirements of the RED (Radio Equipment Directive) are being actively developed.

The standardization request M585 was officially accepted on August 5, 2022, with the final text scheduled for completion by August 30, 2024. This standard will include the following technical specifications to ensure that radio equipment complies with the RED directive’s cybersecurity requirements:

  • Elements for monitoring and controlling network traffic, including outgoing data transmissions.
  • Design features to mitigate the impact of ongoing denial-of-service attacks.
  • Appropriate authentication and access control mechanisms.
  • Deployment of up-to-date software and hardware without known exploitable vulnerabilities.
  • Automated and secure software or firmware update mechanisms to reduce potential vulnerability risks.
  • Protection of exposed attack surfaces and reduction of the impact of successful attacks.
  • Protection of data stored, transmitted, or processed against unauthorized access, processing, disclosure, or destruction.
  • Functionality to inform users of changes that might affect data protection and privacy.
  • Logging of internal activities that impact data protection and privacy.

The implementation of these standards will significantly enhance the security of radio equipment, providing users with a safer environment. The introduction of the new cybersecurity requirements under the RED directive and its associated standards marks a significant step forward for Europe in ensuring cybersecurity.
